Our children develop a passion for reading as they are exposed to high quality texts and immersed in rich vocabulary, which is displayed in the classrooms. The children are developing the skills required to write independently at the expected standard and beyond. We want all of our pupils to be capable readers, writers, spellers and speakers, who can transfer their English skills to other curriculum subjects. At the initial stage of learning to read the children participate in daily phonics lessons.

We use Monster Phonics as our scheme for teaching phonics for early reading and spelling. This is because we are committed to a rigorous approach to securing early reading and literacy skills. Monster Phonics ensures a consistent approach and full engagement in the learning, through the characters, songs and stories. Superhero Spelling is used as whole class teaching and intervention with children in Key Stage 2 for spelling.

Our children learn to read and write through the implementation of Talk for Writing across our school. Children learn key texts using actions and study the way the text has been written from a reader’s perspective as well as a writer’s reasons for using specific grammatical devices. They also use the structure to write their own texts.
